The Trainee Train Assistant at Transnet Freight Rail will support the Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of various types of trains, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy-haul, and passenger trains. The primary goal is to ensure that cargo reaches its destination in good condition and on time, satisfying customer needs.
Responsibilities
Sign on duty, receive and perform allocated tasks.
Prepare and equip the locomotive for operation.
Clean the working area and assist with locomotive startup and brake tests.
Gather necessary equipment for the locomotive.
Conduct checks and supplement equipment as needed.
Assist with locomotive brake tests and startup.
Obtain and check functionality of communication devices (radios, walkie-talkies, etc.).
Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure roadworthiness and adherence to train safety standards.
Attach/detach vehicles as needed, complete required forms, and inspect the train.
Perform shunting tasks as per work orders to ensure safe movement in sidings and along the route.
Update vehicle lists and manage load/empty trucks at sidings.
Aid the Train Driver in monitoring train movement, maintaining safety, and ensuring smooth operations.
Observe signal positions, assist in emergency situations, and reset locomotive trip-outs as necessary.
Follow safety standards and instructions, ensuring preparedness and competence.
Record incidents and deviations, complete the Train Journal, and submit it after each shift.
Requirements
Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Must be at least 1.6m tall.
Able to carry heavy objects.
Pass psychomotor ability assessment (Vienna Testing System) and medical assessments for vision, hearing, and fitness.
Must be over 21 years old.
Willing to undergo periodic medical and safety assessments.
Complete theoretical and practical training to become certified as an independent Train Assistant.
Skills & Competencies
Knowledge of various communication systems, train working rules, safety standards, locomotive classes and layouts, first aid, and general TFR policies.
Skills in locomotive preparation, train handling, time management, stress handling, communication, problem-solving, and psychomotor abilities.
Attributes include safety consciousness, punctuality, self-management, and willingness to work shifts.
